Farmrun- In Progress

0

At our last meeting, we worked on Farmrun, our weakest run, in my view. I just came back from India, so I had to be filled on what is going on. Jonathan, who happens to be in Florida, called in and told me the procedure of jigging Farmrun. I don’t know why, but it did not work that often, so we found a new way of jigging and changed the program, a little bit, because it was hard for Yotty to maneuver in such a little space. We made it hit the robot to the side and push it to base. This way worked almost every time! The way we jigged it is bay putting the bumper right behind the third line, making the corn catcher parallel to the bottom black line. At this time, it was time for the meeting to end.

The Yottabyte Cheer

0

The boys did a quick cheer/yell/scrum to psych themselves up a bit as they waited in the wings before being announced at the recent Northwest Ohio First Lego League qualifying event. Is this the official Yottabyte Cheer?

FishRun is Perfect

1

Today we worked exclusively on FishRun. We made it so Yotty spills the green bacteria and viruses from the contamination risk. We perfected the arm so it still keeps all the fish and bacteria and leaves the baby fish on his mark. We were concerned we could not keep the sweeping design, but we did! We also added a wheel that rides along the side of the contamination risk to prevent the arm from snagging it on the way back to base. We had lots of fun and did a great job. Our improvements only added 4 seconds to the time of FishRun, but increased our point total for the run by 12 points! Now it only fails about once every ten tries, but when it does fail we still get more points than the original FishRun. It is amazing! That is a lot of points! We are planning on improving FarmRun next time.

Districts, here we come!

This meeting was our first since our Toledo competition. Today we were brainstorming what extra points we could get, without adding any time. We thought of getting the trailer, or pizza, while we were getting the rats. We also thought we could get the pink bacteria during Farmrun. For Fishrun we could get the green bacteria, and for Eastrun, we found a way to consistently get the thermometer, getting the purple bacteria, and getting the cooking timer. If we originally got all the runs correct, we would have gotten 176 points. Now, with our new ideas, we could get up to 236 points! We also saw our scoring sheets and saw there was room for improvement. This meeting was very productive. I can’t wait until we go to Dayton!

Beyond Belief!!!

2

We just couldn’t believe it!  This was our rookie year at Lego and what happened?  It was amazing!  Phenomenal! Outstanding!  We are going to Central State University in Dayton for the next level of competition.

Our day was so exciting!  The first round didn’t go that well, but each time we got better.  And better! And, the judges liked our Eggpurdy game and presentation on egg safety.  They didn’t even know some of the stuff about eggs.  So, I guess, we helped them to learn something too.

We placed third in the overall competition and we also WON the Project Award for Egg Safety.  Can you believe it?

We have such a great team!  Thank you Mr. Buchanan and Sumit for coaching and mentoring us!  Thank you Jonathan, Shreyas, and Mihir for being such great teammates.  And thanks to the moms and little brothers too!

YOTTY’S FINEST HOUR!

1

Competition! I never thought that day would come. But yet we were there, on December 3rd at 7:15 in the morning, standing outside Toledo Tech Academy, with Yotty slumbering in my hands. Registration took almost no time. Surprisingly, we were the first team there. I prepared to have my hair sprayed green as some other teams came in. They were smart enough to bring their own mat to practice on, so they didn’t have to quarrel over the two test tables. We should do that next time.

We went to be judged on our robot, and the judges really liked our fish sweeping arm. Then we went to be judged on our core values, where we had to make an ice cream cone out of envelopes in less than five minutes. We succeeded and rushed toward the Opening Ceremonies, where Mihir announced our team and our names to everybody. Then, we had to go and be judged on our project. We presented Eggpardy, and the judges loved it. They even gave us suggestions on what extra things we could do, if we went to districts. After that we went to the test tables to practice for the first round. We were confident that we would do good.

Then the first round came. Everything went horribly. Ratrun failed, Farmrun failed, and Eastrun failed. The only thing that worked was Fishrun. Our total score for that round was 83 points. We were so disappointed. After the round, we tweaked Ratrun and Farmrun at the test tables. We came back for the second round and did much better. Ratrun didn’t work, but Farmrun,  and Fishrun were a success. Eastrun did all right. We touched the east wall, and accidentally knocked down some bacteria, but we didn’t get the thermometer. Including touch penalties, we scored 111 points in the second round.

We relaxed for a few minutes and then headed for the third and final round. I was really nervous and the coach gave us an uplifting talk. I felt a bit more confident. We walked to the table and set up. The referee counted to three and the round started. Ratrun was a success and worked well. Farmrun got the corn, but didn’t get the truck. My heart skipped a beat when I pulled out the fish sweeping arm, only to find it was broken! We immediately decided to skip the fish and go straight to Eastrun. I jigged nervously, fearing the worst as I set Yotty off. I looked at Yotty as he rolled towards the wall. I couldn’t believe my eyes when Yotty’s arm smacked the thermometer spindle, just like we programmed, causing the thermometer arm to spin around all the way!! Then Yotty spun around and touched the east wall! For that round, we got 119 points, which put us in fourth place out of thirteen!

We went to the Closing Ceremony. We all thought we would be the alternate team because we didn’t get in the top three. To our surprise, we got handed the Project Award! The judge must have really liked Eggpardy. Those points bumped us up to third place! That meant we were going to districts! We celebrated at Mihir’s house and discussed what we could change for districts.

Road trip to Dayton!!!!!!

1

We did great at the competition!!!! We got third place so we will go to Dayton!!! We had so much fun! We had to get there at 7:15 AM. We were the first team there! Then we went to robot judging and showed the judges Yotty. We ran FishRun for them and they liked it. Then we went to the test tables and tested some of our runs. Then we went to the core values judging. We had to make an ice cream cone out of envelopes in five minutes. We did it! Then we did a couple more tests on the test tables. Then we went to present Eggpardy! The judges really loved it. Then we did some more tests. Everything went well. Then it was time. We went to our table for our first round. We faced a team called the Super Smoothies. We didn’t do that well on that one. The funny thing was that on EastRun when we were going to set the arm down on the east wall it got caught in the cables. We only scored 83 points. We went back to the pits and the test tables. We made some changes to RatRun and FarmRun. Then we rested for 15 minutes. Then we went back to the competition tables. It was time for the second match. We did much better than the last time. We scored 111 points. Then we went for the third match. We played against the St. John’s Titan’s Arrows. Shreyas had started jigging RatRun. We gave the ref the thumbs up symbol. The match started. We got the Red Rat. Then we had to do FarmRun. We put on the corn catcher and jigged it. We set it off. It got the corn on the mat and the pesticide. We almost got the truck but we didn’t. Yotty got stuck and we had to take a touch penalty. Next was FishRun. I went down to grab the fish run arm. OH NO! It was broken in half!!!!!!!!! We had to skip it and go right to EastRun. We jigged up EastRun. Then we set Yotty off! He did great! He even hit the thermometer over!!! That was 30 points!!!!!!!!! Then he got the east wall! We were so exited! We had 119 points! We had fourth place. Later they announced the awards. We got the project award. The award gives us extra points. That boosted us up into third place. We were so excited! We went to celebrate at Mihir’s house. We had so much fun!
